Are snow chains or winter tyres compulsory in Germany, Austria or Switzerland?

Not using winter tyres abroad in winter conditions can result in a fine, prosecution and liability for an accident. Even when using winter tyres, it may be necessary under certain conditions to use them in combination with snow chains.

Germany

Winter tyres
The traffic regulations stipulate that cars must use tyres that are suitable for the weather conditions. During winter conditions, cars must have a set of winter equipment. There is no fixed period for this. The weather, certainly in the mountains, can produce some surprises even outside of the winter months. The conditions are certainly deemed to be wintery if there is any snow or ice on the road. Winter equipment includes in particular tyres suited to winter conditions but also sufficient windscreen wiper fluid and good windscreen wipers. This obligation also applies to Dutch cars. In addition to a fine, not using winter tyres can result in liability for an accident.

Snow chains
The use of snow chains can also be compulsory in certain conditions. This will be indicated by a road sign. In this case, the obligation also applies to four wheel drive vehicles. The maximum speed for driving with snow chains is 50 km per hour.

Austria

Winter tyres
From 1 November to 15 April it is obligatory during winter conditions to have winter tyres on all four wheels or snow chains on the drive wheels (can also be combined).
Snow chains may only be used if they cannot damage the road surface. The entire road must therefore be covered with snow or ice. Not using winter tyres or snow chains can affect your liability for an accident and result in prosecution.

Snow chains
Snow chains may only be used if this is necessary and if they have been mounted in a way that will not damage the road surface. Snow chains are compulsory in certain locations, which will be indicated by a round, blue sign depicting a car tyre and a chain. This sign means you must put on snow chains. The caption will indicate which vehicles that are excluded from this provision. The end of this obligation is indicated by a round, blue sign with a red line. The recommended speed is 40 km per hour. The use of snow chains is not permitted in the Arlberg tunnel.

Switserland

Winter tyres
There is no statutory regulation, however, they are recommended. Omitting to use winter tyres can play an important role in apportioning liability for an accident and can result in prosecution. A fine can also be issued for hindrance caused by driving with unsuitable tyres.

Snow chains
If the road conditions make it necessary to use snow chains, it is compulsory to do so. The use of snow chains is sometimes compulsory, which will be indicated by a road sign. The maximum speed when using snow chains is 50 km per hour. The use of snow chains is not permitted in the Selisberg, St. Gotthard and San Bernardino tunnels.
